Bass district rangers and members of the Bighorn National Forest steering committee met Tuesday to discuss proposed changes to length-of-stay camping provisions in the forest. The new provisions would affect both developed campgrounds and dispersed camping. Recreation and Lands staff officer Dave McKee says about 70 public comments on the proposal have been received so far. He says the length-of-stay limits are intended to improve consistency at all the developed campsites and to increase the availability of dispersed sites. Under the plan all campgrounds would have a 16-day stay limit between June 1 and Sept.

Police were called to Ravena Coeymans Selkirk High School on Monday morning after personnel spotted people camping out on the school grounds. That’s where an officer found 22-year-old Meahgan McCleary of Buffalo lounging in a lawn chair. Her car doors were open and several of her belongings were spread out on the ground. While the officer was talking to McCleary employees from the nearby LaFarge Cement Plant arrived with her two friends. Twenty-two-year-old Stephen Roll of Buffalo and 25-year-old Matthew Schroeder of Tonawanda were caught digging rocks out of the cement plant quarry looking for crystals.

—Elko police say the arrests of two homeless men on illegal camping charges shows a rise in the number of homeless people living in the city. Will Lehmann says authorities think there are more than 100 homeless people living in Elko. He says the city has had a bigger problem with illegal camping this year than ever before and the department is cracking down. San Bernardino County authorities had been checking out a missing persons report when searchers found Carlos Sanchez and his mother Alisha Sanchez 28 Thursday. She explained her son had died the previous day. They’d set out from their home in Las Vegas last weekend on a one-day camping trip to Death Valley. Their Jeep Grand Cherokee suffered a flat tire becoming stuck in the sand in a remote area of the China Lake Naval Weapons Center. — The IndyCar Series is returning to Watkins Glen International. The IRL schedule for next year was released on Friday and has The Glen hosting a race on Fourth of July weekend for the fourth straight year. The sixth annual Camping World Grand Prix at The Glen will take place the weekend of July 2-4. Tickets go on sale in November. Track officials had hoped to move the race back to September after polling fans. Eighteen of Gowan’s boys and girls were back this week for a five-day team running camp at ASU that gave them the chance to train at elevation and if their success at a Thursday meet for campers was any predictor of the season to come the teams again may be a threat to bring home state championships. Chiles sophomore girls Lily Williams and Carly Thomas finished one-two by a sizable margin over their closest competitors leading the nine Chiles runners to a first-place finish among teams from around the Southeast including second-place powerhouse Chapel Hill which has won eight North Carolina state championships. Williams ran the two-mile course off the Boone Greenway at State Farm Field in 11:51 with Thomas finishing in 12:10. Their closest competitor was more than 10 seconds behind Thomas. Jody McGuff also on last year’s championship team attended the camp but didn’t race because of a minor injury.

Pennsylvania’s state park system is already seeing about 1000 more campers this year than in 2008. n Memorial Day the state park system reported almost all of its 7870 campsites filled. “We feel like people are looking for more affordable options for options that are closer to home” said Christina Novak a spokeswoman for the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. With 339 campsites along its lake Pinchot is one of the largest campgrounds in the state.
