At only three plus hours away it is the closest destination resembling wilderness to the Chicago area. From Sauk City to the confluence with the Mississippi the river is almost completely sand bottom and it is protected by the Lower Wisconsin River Board. It is 92 miles of the best camping in the Midwest and some may argue anywhere. Scenery highlights include picturesque sand bars beautiful bluffs and lush vegetation bordering the shoreline and topping the rolling hills of the river valley.

Touch of Nature to host Camp Little Giant this summer

Camp Little Giant at Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Touch of Nature Environmental Center proves that giving children and adults with disabilities a chance to enjoy a real summer camp experience. “We have a can-do attitude at Camp Little Giant” said Vicki Lang-Mendenhall camp director and environmental education program coordinator for Touch of Nature. “We can provide an experience for our campers just like campers have at any other camp. ”Camp Little Giant is a therapeutic recreation camp offering swimming fishing paddleboat rides horseback riding talent shows hayrides carnivals nature hikes and much more. The co-educational camp is all set on the center’s 3100 scenic acres along the shores of Little Grassy Lake.

The father and son team is approximately halfway through what they are calling a “wicked -long run”. The pair started their journey in Fort Kent and plan to run all the way to Kittery a distance of more than 500 miles. As they run they are trying to raise money and awareness for Camp CaPella in Dedham. Camp CaPella gives children with disabilities the opportunity to attend summer camp along Phillips Lake. The camp is one of two camps in the state that cater to children with special needs. Tuition cost about $1250 per child per week. “We heard about Camp CaPella and it is a great opportunity for kids to go to camp” Roger Marquis explained while taking a brief rest in Bangor on Tuesday.
