The unmistakable sounds of sanders and hammers hitting large nails fill the otherwise still air on the 104 acre property in South Hero. About 70 kids with cancer will arrive for a week of camping in just two months and before they get here there is a lot of work to do. “It's slowly taking place but if you're gone a day or two and you come back you're amazed the amount of work that's done” says Ted Kessler Camp TaKumTa director.

Sisco said he isn’t seeing campers from out of state but is getting a lot of last-minute bookings from in-state residents coming from places such as Colorado Springs and Greeley. Lea Jones of Colorado is currently staying at the KA with her husband in their fifth-wheel RV. She said as they travel around the country she hasn’t seen any decrease in camping. Jones said that is because camping is a good family activity and is cheaper than other vacation options such as flying to a resort.
