Iyahanna a 13-year-old eighth-grader who attends Cornerstone School got a chance to travel to Camp Cherith in Oscoda with her family. Brother Dennis sister Nakya and parents Chris and Patricia joined her to share in the good times. City Mission held a Summer Family Camp for the first time in 2007 and hopes to invite 40 to 60 children ages 4 to 17 and their families for this year’s session. Families from Brightmoor spend three days at the camp living with the families of City Mission’s staff. The families not only share cabins they also eat together and participate in activities such as horseback riding archery swimming dune climbing and campfires. “We’ve been to places like New York Chicago and Ohio but going to camp with my family last year gave us a chance to do some things we had never done before” Iyahanna said. “We went horseback riding canoeing and swimming… Brother Dennis sister Nakya and parents Chris and Patricia joined her to share in the good times. Carey executive director of Special Days Camps describes the camp as a medically safe camping experience for children who have had cancer and for their siblings. Special Days Camps which was founded in 1979 rents the YMCA’s Storer Camps’ 1200-acre camp south of Jackson. Camp is held twice a year and is for children ages 5-17. Summer camp this year will be from July 20 to Aug. Winter camp is held the first weekend in February. About 200 children participate in the summer session and 150-200 in the winter session.
