2008 AN overnight camping adventure for two young men at Waimarama on Saturday led to an airborne search and rescue and a stern piece of “tell someone what you’re up to’ advice from police. It was a callout that could have been prevented had the pair made their plans known to someone police said. A spokesman said it was vital for anyone intending to embark on any outdoors venture especially if it would involve overnighting to make others aware of their intentions. Saturday night’s callout took several hours of police time that could have been better spent elsewhere police said. The incident was sparked just before 8… The Lowe Corporation rescue helicopter was called to the scene as it had forward-looking infra red and night-vision equipment. Pilot Brett Williams said the equipment proved its worth within a short time of embarking on the search. “We found them camping about two kilometres south of Waimarama at Cray Bay’ he said. The pair somewhat astonished when a helicopter put down nearby told the crew they had embarked on an overnight beach camping trip. “They were pretty embarrassed. We definitely let them know they should have made their plans clear and they were very apologetic. ‘ Waimarama local Keith Cross said he did not think the pair were locals and added there had been similar incidents in the past where rescue call-outs had been sparked by people not making their plans known.
