Tanzania: Set free on safari
Telegraph.co.uk – Feb 20, 2008
Tanzania is said to be the toughest because of the lack of infrastructure and the poor state of the roads. When I first received the itinerary I looked at it with trepidation – we were going to travel some 800 miles in eight days over rough terrain in some of the remotest parts of the country. The camping was described as “challenging”. By that they meant washing facilities were scarce and lavatories involved a shovel. If I didn’t crash or lose the way then I surely would be gored by a buffalo savaged by a lion or fall into a long-drop. But doubts were soon put to rest on our arrival in Arusha. With my chum Patrick Drummond an old Africa hand who was also filming the trip I caught the twin-prop air shuttle to Kilimanjaro from Nairobi and then on to a charming lodge at Ngurdoto on the fringe of Arusha national park… But doubts were soon put to rest on our arrival in Arusha. With my chum Patrick Drummond an old Africa hand who was also filming the trip I caught the twin-prop air shuttle to Kilimanjaro from Nairobi and then on to a charming lodge at Ngurdoto on the fringe of Arusha national park. The next morning over coffee at the base camp of African Environments the ground handlers for Safari Drive we were given an extensive briefing on our vehicle (a Land Rover Defender with roof-top tent) the equipment (including satellite phone and a GPS gadget) route and safety: “Never leave the tent after dark without extreme caution”. They had no worries on that score – once I was in the tent there was no way I’d be venturing out till sunrise. The information digested we began our journey but not before topping up on supplies – the last chance we’d have – from the supermarket. We had already been supplied with a chest-full of tinned and dried food and we added fresh meat cheese fruit and – essentially – beer wine and drinking water. Tarangire National Park was first on the schedule and we made the most of the rare stretch of sealed road en route.

You have to keep in mind that the family with the exception of one sister is all in their 60s” said Spackman. Spackman sisters Ruth Davis and Cathy Juntgen will continue to work in their same capacities at least through the next season and possibly beyond. Davis oversees employees and Juntgen operates Yogi Bear Jellystone Camp Resort. Spackman said he will stay on at least for several months and likely through the 2008 season as a consultant. “There will be a lot of additional people coming in as well” Spackman said. There will also be good things happening along with an influx of finances to add more improvements down the road. “They have a 24 hour call center for all of their campgrounds so you have a reservation service all the time… 5 million has gone back into the park each year for about the past eight or more years he said. At Jellystone the attempt has been to add a couple of camping cabins each year where someone else possibly Morgan might add 10 per year. “I think it’s going to be a win-win situation for Monticello and White County” said Spackman. Hard to say goodbyeWhile it may be business as usual for Indiana Beach as the park changes hands for the first time in its history emotional ties are still hard to break. “It’s a little bit hard from the fact that my granddad started it and I grew up with it – I don’t think there will be one thing I miss it’s the total of things that I will miss” said Spackman. Spackman’s father Tom senior who still makes appearances now and then at 90-something seems to be taking it well according to Spackman.

Home is sacred even if it’s a tent
Seattle Post Intelligencer – Feb 20, 2008
His life would not have been in jeopardy at all if there were enough shelter and affordable housing for all the homeless people in King County. The city’s proposed new encampment sweeps policies increase the jeopardy for homeless people. The new policies offer 48 hours’ notice to people camping outside provide storage for some belongings deemed nontoxic hire outreach workers (outreach to what?) and allow multiple city departments to get people off public land. We are homeless and formerly homeless members of grassroots organizing efforts called SHARE (Seattle Housing and Resource Effort) and WHEEL (the Women’s Housing Equality and Enhancement League). Every day we face the realities of homelessness and every day we hear from homeless people whose meager belongings have been taken or trashed whose campsites have been bulldozed or who have lost a loved one to death by homelessness. Those camps should be given Dumpsters and portable toilets in exchange for running a safe and healthy camp.

Cathy and her husband Harold are enjoying their retirement days together whether they are camping at katibbee Lake or in Kemper County. “We love to hunt and we love to fish” Moore said. “We camp most all summer and fish since the children love to go. We build camp fires and stay up late. “The Moores also belong to a deer camp. With three children and seven grandchildren the family always celebrate Thanksgiving at their second home in Kemper County and spend much of the day hunting. “We enjoy just sitting on the front porch in the swing” Moore said of their country home.

hio Primary May Be Key to Nomination Process
NPR – Feb 20, 2008
But the differences between Clinton and Illinois Sen. Barack bama on jobs and the economy have been hard for many hio voters to decipher. Instead the battle for the Democratic nomination seems to be about the old guard that touts Clinton’s experience versus the new guard that touts bama’s vision. Many veteran politicos have endorsed Clinton including the hio governor and one of the state’s heroes former astronaut and Sen. Most Clinton supporters say they like bama but Clinton is more qualified. Then there are a few Clinton backers who are more critical of bama such as tattoo parlor owner Renee Peril.
