Everest: at the foot of the giant
Telegraph.co.uk – Jan 28, 2008
In the end we hired 100 human porters and stamped a trail for them. Crossing the Langma La became an Everest in its own right. When I returned 10 years later trekking to the Kangshung base camp in the regular autumn season we had none of those problems. We also approached over the slightly lower pass of the Shao La making the trek a more satisfying circuit finishing with the Langma La as the grand climax. The trek starts in the Kharta Valley where the road ends at a hamlet called Yuba. The footpath winds through barley fields fringed by Himalayan birch. It is quite a gentle domestic landscape with little hint that you are barely 30 miles from the world’s highest mountain… But it had also been a joyful struggle – a return to life heralded by the first pale yellow and pink rhododendron blooms. This time it was autumn and I was here just to trek strong and fit with a spring in my stride simply enjoying this glorious landscape. ur final camp before leaving the Kama Valley was beside a lake called Shurima which means Lama’s throne. As the light changed the lake glowed cobalt turquoise and ultramarine – a precious stone set among slopes of autumnal amber and yellow. To the south and west the Everest cirque filled the horizon. You could understand why the lamas had declared the place sacred -and why when we finally crossed the Langma La in the morning each of the Tibetans left a prayer or a picture or some other memento on the shrine that marks the crossing from one valley to another. Even after more than two weeks’ acclimatisation I felt slightly puffed on that final pass.
Nigeria: NFA Holds Crucial Meeting
AllAfrica.com – Jan 28, 2008
GA_googleFillSlot( “AllAfrica_Story_Inset” );The meeting chaired by Sani Lulu evaluated the participation of the team in the tournament and possible reasons for the inability of the team to have won one match a situation which may see the highly rated side crash out of the tournament in the first round. A highly reliable source who pleaded anonymity told Champion Sports that the meeting took a critical look into the team’s build up to the championship with special reference to the camping and even the technical depth of embattled coach Berti Vogts. Many analysts have blamed the poor showing on Eagles camping in Malaga Spain a region that was said to have been cold for a tournament that is holding in a tropical region of West Africa. The issue of the weather is highly suspected to be the reason the Super Eagles players always tired out shortly after the commencement of a match. Also the tensed meeting probed deep into the mode of selection of chief coach Berti Vogts of some players who have over time failed to live up to expectations even as they always have the opportunity to prove themselves. There was equally the issue of the rumours making the rounds that most of the players were loosed as they often strole out of the camp to a nearby hotel where their friends arrange and lodge girls for them. Some of the players were seen going into the very hotel which is just opposite the Ray Bow Hotel camp of the team the same night they woefuuly failed to beat Mali to have kept alife the hope of making it to the quarter finals of the tournament.
RVs on Selkirk Lake concern some residents
mlive.com – Jan 28, 2008
The primary area of concern for lake residents was the inclusion of language that allowed a recreational vehicle to be parked on a vacant lot for up to 90 days. “Ninety days seems excessive. It essentially allows someone to set up camp for the entire summer” said Selkirk Lake summer resident Ken Young. “We had a travel trailer set up now this year a mobile home. This area was designed residential not trailer park. Planning Commission Chairperson Mark Chrusciel pointed out that ordinances are formed with the entire township in mind not just the lake. “What about a resident with a 10-acre property who wants to camp out by their pond” Chrusciel asked… This area was designed residential not trailer park. Planning Commission Chairperson Mark Chrusciel pointed out that ordinances are formed with the entire township in mind not just the lake. “What about a resident with a 10-acre property who wants to camp out by their pond” Chrusciel asked. “We don’t want to restrict their rights as a property owner. Zoning Administrator Kirk Sharphorn Jr. said the Selkirk Lake Association could establish building rules of its own. “Associations have more legal latitude than townships to enforce building codes” he said.
Adam Gilchrist to chase big money in India
NEWS.com.au – Jan 28, 2008
There was a point in time when I just knew. "As tributes continued to pour in from across the cricketing world yesterday there was one man Gilchrist was desperate to hear from – his brother Glenn who is away on camp and has been out of telephone range. "He is camping in the middle of Queensland" Gilchrist said. "If someone sees him please tell him. "Glenn my brother track him down I’d love him to be here. "Gilchrist’s parents rushed to Adelaide from their NSW home town of Lismore on Saturday to see their son in action for the final time in Test cricket. Gilchrist will provide a tell-all about his decision to quit once the deciding fourth Test is over.
