It’s time to get out the camping gear. For many families it’s just not a vacation unless there’s camping involved… After hours on the trail or combing the beach it’s relaxing to putter around outdoors and linger over a nice meal. For once I have nothing but time and there’s no question that exercise and fresh air make everything taste better. We’re talking car camping here. Backpacking poses extra challenges making it hard to get by without resorting to dried ingredients and a lot of packaged foods. Weight is not an issue though when you’re traveling by car. And a new generation of coolers can keep meat and produce chilled for days if you don’t open the lid too frequently. The secret is to go for simple preparation and big flavors.

Hibernation however is the last thing on the minds of prep football players and college coaches around the country. It is “Camp” season so its no time to rest for prospects competing for scholarships and college coaches looking for the next superstar or sleeper athlete… Its no wonder that there are plenty of parents and supporters roaming the sidelines tracking the performance of the players during the event. Coaches are not allowed at most of the camps that take place (in particular the ones which have timed events and measurements). So when they host their own camp its a great chance to see the athletes they’ve reviewed on film up-close and personal. To satisfy your off-season football jones I recommend that you attend one of these camps to see the madness first hand if there is one being held at a college or stadium near you. They are normally free and the drama will surprise you. I have attended a few camps this spring and summer and got a chance to stop by the Rising Stars Camp at USC this past week. I came away with impressed and with a few essentials for going “camping”:1) Get a Roster Sheet – If a roster sheet is available make sure you grab one because it can be very difficult to tell who’s who among the hundreds of athletes on the field.
