A group of protesters moved into the landmark square in central London to protest against the Iraq war vowing to remain there until after the handover of power from Tony Blair to Gordon Brown later this week. The group calling themselves ‘war is still the issue’ say they have not and will not apply for permission to camp there despite the long running controversy over protests in Parliament Square dating back to 2003. But with police looking on from a distance Scotland Yard said that it believed the peace campaigners did have permission to be there. At the heart of the confusion is the familiar figure of Brian Haw who has spent several years camping opposite Parliament despite repeated bids to evict him and even a change in the law which had been expected to drive him out.

This year a number of them are bringing along mom and dad. Although farm camps and wilderness camps have their own following camps that allow families to take part are gaining in popularity. In the past 15 years the number of camps offering family camping has grown by 215 percent nationwide according to the American Camp Association which accredits summer camps. “The idea is to rekindle the summer camp experience we all had but now want to share with our families” said George Stone co-owner of Medomak a family camp in Washington about 15 miles east of Augusta. Campers started arriving in Maine late last week jamming baggage conveyer belts with their heavy duffel bags at the Portland International Jetport and heading up the highways in buses. By the time the summer season winds down some 40000 children from Maine and other states will have participated in youth programs mostly at the 200 summer camps licensed by the state said Mary Ellen Deschenes of the Maine Youth Camping Association a nonprofit organization. - A The 5-year-old boy who was struck by a falling tree limb during a camping trip in Canby last week has died. Ethan Hansen suffered traumatic head injuries when the branch fell on him while he slept in a tent Thursday night. He was with his father and several friends at Elks Park. The 20-foot branch weighed several hundred pounds and broke from a tree nearly 30 feet off the ground. Ethan’s family plans to donate his organs.
